Today, 115 future doctors from Geisinger School of Medicine participated in "Match Day," an event where fourth-year M.D. students nationwide discover their residency placements. Julie Byerley, M.D., M.P.H., president of Geisinger College of Health Sciences and dean of the School of Medicine, highlighted the success of this year's Match Day.
"Once again, our School of Medicine celebrated a successful Match Day," Dr. Byerley said. She emphasized that students matched into both local residency programs and some of the nation's most competitive specialties. Notably, 16 students will begin their residencies at Geisinger, potentially remaining in the region to serve local communities.
Dr. Byerley also noted that over a third of the Class of 2024 consists of Abigail Geisinger Scholars who will return to work at Geisinger after completing their residencies elsewhere.
The event took place at the Scranton Cultural Center where Dr. Byerley addressed the graduating class: “Today is not only your dream come true. It is our dream too – it is the dream of each of your faculty and staff that you will become physicians that use your amazing skills, talents, and teachings to be in service to others.”
Geisinger hospitals also learned about new residents joining them this summer across various programs with 148 new physicians matched into 29 residency programs.
Some notable matches include Alexandra Angheloiu for Internal Medicine in Wilkes-Barre and Steven Grampp for Orthopaedic Surgery in Danville.
