State Representative Robert Leadbeter of Columbia has announced plans to introduce legislation in Pennsylvania aimed at protecting minors from exposure to drag shows. The proposed law would classify it as a third-degree felony for anyone allowing a minor to attend such events.
In his statement, Leadbeter emphasized the importance of shielding children from what he described as "lewd, sexually profane environments." He pointed out that existing Pennsylvania laws already penalize actions that could corrupt the morals of minors. According to him, his proposal aims to enhance these regulations by specifically banning minors from attending performances with sexual content.
Leadbeter expressed concerns about the impact of drag shows on children, stating that they often include "overtly sexual themes, inappropriate outfits, and explicit language." He argued that exposure to such content can lead to negative psychological effects on minors, citing studies from institutions like the National Institutes of Health which link this exposure to increased risks of depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem among children.
"This legislation is about more than just protecting children from inappropriate content; it’s about upholding the fundamental values that have long defined our communities," said Leadbeter. He criticized what he sees as radical agendas undermining public decency and cultural foundations in Pennsylvania.
He concluded by urging Pennsylvanians who value faith, family, and freedom to support his initiative. "I will not stand by while our children are exposed to inappropriate and harmful content," he stated.
