Geisinger is introducing a private police officer program to enhance security at its facilities. Earlier this month, 10 officers were sworn in, bringing the total to 13 who will soon begin patrolling Geisinger properties. This initiative aims to supplement state and local police efforts within the health system's jurisdiction.
The newly appointed officers will have specific responsibilities and powers on Geisinger properties. They will be equipped with firearms and non-lethal tools, approved by courts, and sworn in locally. Sean McGinley, Geisinger's associate vice president of Security Operations and a former Pennsylvania State Police officer, emphasized the importance of providing a safe environment for all. "Everyone deserves a safe and secure healing and working environment," McGinley stated.
Candidates for the program must have prior law enforcement experience and undergo rigorous background checks and training comparable to traditional law enforcement standards.
This development is part of Geisinger's ongoing investment in safety over the past five years, which includes installing metal detectors at emergency rooms, adding AI-equipped security cameras, specialized staff training, and a K-9 program. McGinley highlighted that "this program has been thoughtfully planned over some time," aiming to benefit staff, patients, and visitors.
Recruitment efforts are ongoing as Geisinger plans to expand the officer program in the coming months.
