State Sens. Dave Argall, Lisa Baker, Lynda Schlegel Culver, and Marty Flynn have come together to announce a significant development in Luzerne County. They revealed that the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority (PBDA) will be providing over $4.3 million in grants to enhance access to reliable, high-speed internet in the area.

According to Culver, "Investments in broadband in rural communities create an endless number of possibilities for Pennsylvania residents. This investment will help residents access vital resources that were previously unavailable because of poor connections or the lack of options in their area."

The grant money, originating from the federally funded Broadband Infrastructure Program, aims to address the need for improved internet service in communities lacking 25/3 Mbps speeds. Argall emphasized the importance of high-speed internet, stating, "It is a necessity for students, employees, patients, and more. Everyone who worked to make this a reality for the most underserved areas of Luzerne County deserves congratulations."

Baker highlighted the significance of enhanced internet access in economic development, particularly in rural areas. She stated, "Money for expanded and enhanced internet access is a key component of every economic development strategy, affecting communities large and small. This helps businesses, institutions, educators, workers, and at-home entrepreneurs."

Flynn echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the essential role of high-speed internet in various aspects of life. He noted, "Access to high-speed internet is essential for education, healthcare, business, and everyday life. These funds will empower our constituents and strengthen our local economy."

The PBDA will ensure accountability and transparency by mandating progress reports from grantees, providing guidance on requirements, and monitoring the use of funds. Grantees are expected to utilize the funding effectively to maximize benefits across the customer base. The PBDA's efforts reflect a broader initiative to bridge the digital divide, established by the General Assembly in 2021.
