Michelle Schmude, EdD, MBA, vice provost for enrollment management and a professor of medical education at Geisinger College of Health Sciences, has rejoined the faculty of Harvard Macy Institute’s (HMI) Program for Educators in Health Professions. Dr. Schmude initially joined the program in 2018.
The HMI Program for Educators in Health Professions is based in Boston and focuses on professional development for healthcare professionals as educators. It aims to enhance participants’ skills and knowledge to effectively teach and lead within the evolving field of medical education.
Dr. Schmude has been actively involved with HMI, contributing to strategies that foster professionalism among medical students—a crucial element in preventing burnout and ensuring compassionate care delivery by future doctors.
“The most meaningful professional development experience of my career has been as a scholar and faculty member in the HMI’s Program for Educators in Health Professions,” said Dr. Schmude. She expressed gratitude towards Dr. William Iobst for encouraging her initial participation in 2017, as well as appreciation for Dr. Elizabeth Armstrong, the founder of HMI, her team, and colleagues Drs. William Jeffries and Julie Byerley.
In her return to the Institute, Dr. Schmude will assume several roles including project group co-lead and facilitator, journal club co-lead and facilitator, microteaching group co-lead and facilitator, faculty facilitator at the HMI World Café focused on ongoing professional advancement for mid-career and senior educators, and ePoster session facilitator.
Additionally, she will co-present an elective session titled “Communication Styles: Examining Our Assumptions,” which explores four different communication styles affecting interactions. This session encourages learners to understand their own communication style while examining emotional intelligence domains through small group work.
Geisinger College of Health Sciences emphasizes innovation combined with purpose to educate future healthcare leaders across its research institute, graduate medical education programs, schools of medicine, graduate education programs in nursing, alongside faculty development initiatives.
