In response to the increase in forest fires across Pennsylvania and nationwide, Representative Michael Stender, representing Montour and Northumberland counties, has announced plans to introduce a three-bill legislative package. The initiative aims to enhance the state's approach towards preventing, managing, and combating wildfires.
Rep. Stender emphasized the urgent need for action due to the rise in wildfires. "This surge in wildfires demands immediate action. If we want to protect our communities, our first responders, and our natural resources, we must invest in wildfire prevention and response efforts," said Stender. He further explained the purpose of the proposed legislative package: "The bills I will introduce are designed to enhance our state’s ability to combat wildfires, strengthen our forest fire response infrastructure and ensure the safety of all Pennsylvanians."
The proposed legislation includes three primary components. The first bill intends to elevate the position of the chief forest fire warden to the level of deputy secretary within the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, providing additional authority and support for wildfire-related activities. The second bill focuses on providing financial reimbursements for local forest fire wardens, covering training, fire investigations, prescribed burns, and public outreach. The third bill proposes an annual requirement for the chief forest fire warden to report to the General Assembly on wildfire prevention efforts and improvements in combating forest fires.
"We must act now to ensure Pennsylvania is prepared for the growing threat of wildfires and our communities are safer in the years to come," added Stender.
Stender plans to keep the public informed about the status of this legislative package throughout the current legislative session. Further inquiries can be directed to Stender's office in Harrisburg.
