Rep. Michael Stender, representing Northumberland and Montour, expressed dissatisfaction with the recently voted $45.55 billion Fiscal Year 2023-24 state budget. Stender cast a dissenting vote, citing concerns over the budget's impact on taxpayers amidst rising inflation.
"Unfortunately, it appears this budget stalemate will continue at least through September, and I am extremely disappointed in the way this process has played out," said Stender. "This budget overall is a 6% increase from last year’s budget and at a time when inflation is only getting worse, the last thing Pennsylvanians need is a tax hike, which this increase in spending will ultimately come to."
The budget bill is pending Senate approval with the next session scheduled for September 18.
In related matters, Stender voted in favor of House Bill 1100, which aims to expand the income threshold for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program. "To make more Pennsylvania seniors and people with disabilities eligible for additional property tax and rent relief. House Bill 1100 would increase income limits for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program from $35,000 for homeowners and renters to $45,000 and increase the amount each recipient can receive from a maximum of $650 to $1,000."
"I believe this was one of the more productive legislative measures we agreed upon recently and will help our low-income seniors," Stender noted. This measure awaits the governor's signature to become law.
