Sen. Lynda Schlegel Culver and Rep. Mike Cabell have announced a state grant of $777,449 for the upgrade and expansion of the water treatment plant in Sugarloaf Township. The grant, awarded to the Conyngham Sugarloaf Joint Municipal Authority, will help defray the costs of this significant project and ensure that the local taxpayers are protected while the community benefits from an enhanced water treatment plant.
"This grant will help defray the costs of this large project, which will protect local taxpayers while ensuring the community benefits from the enhanced water treatment plant," said Sen. Culver. "This is an example of the federal government and state government working together to help a local government provide an essential service."
The grant has been made possible through the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA), an independent agency of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. The CFA administers the economic stimulus packages of the commonwealth and awarded the grant to the Conyngham Sugarloaf Joint Municipal Authority.
The funding for the grant comes from the federal COVID-19 American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and is disbursed through the H20 PA Program. Rep. Cabell highlighted the significance of this funding opportunity, stating, "This H2O PA funding is a unique opportunity to take on larger projects, like what's needed to resolve the longstanding wastewater treatment issues facing the Conyngham Sugarloaf Joint Municipal Authority."
The H2O PA Program, established in 2008 by the General Assembly, provides grants for the construction of drinking water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer projects, as well as flood control projects and the repair or rehabilitation of high-hazard unsafe dams.
This grant announcement represents a collaboration between the federal government, state government, and local authorities to address crucial infrastructure needs. With the upgrade and expansion of the Sugarloaf Township water treatment plant, the community will benefit from improved water services and enhanced environmental protection.
