Brenda Shaughnessy — an the author of five poetry collections, including The Octopus Museum (2019), So Much Synth (2016), and Our Andromeda (2012), which was a finalist for the Kingsley Tufts Award, The International Griffin Prize, and the PEN Open Book Award — will present a free, public reading in Bucknell Hall as part of the Sandra & Gary Sojka Poet-in-Residence program.
Shaughnessy’s recent collaborative projects include writing a libretto for a mass commissioned by Trinity Church Wall Street for composer Paola Prestini, and a poem-essay for the exhibition catalog for Toba Khedoori’s solo retrospective show at LACMA. She teaches at Rutgers University-Newark.
For 40 years, the Stadler Center for Poetry & Literary Arts’ Sojka Poet-in-Residence program has brought poets of national and international renown to Bucknell for an extended stay during the academic year. The Sojka Poet-in-Residence meets individually with qualified students, gives a public reading, and engages in a Q&A. The program is meant to honor the achievement of a distinguished poet while providing undergraduate writers the opportunity to work with an exceptionally talented poet. Bucknell President Gary Sojka (1985-95) was instrumental in the founding of the Center and, with his wife Sandy, remains dedicated to its success. Among our recent Poets-in-Residence are Mark Doty, Camille Dungy, Terrance Hayes, Brenda Hillman, Claudia Rankine, and Mary Ruefle.
