With the holiday shopping season underway, Pennsylvania State Senator Lynda Schlegel Culver (R-27) is urging residents to be cautious of scams, fraud, and theft. Senator Culver emphasized the importance of protecting personal information and finances during this time.
“During the holidays, we all want to focus on family and tradition, not unexpected problems caused by scammers. A few simple steps can go a long way in protecting your personal information and your hard-earned money. I encourage everyone to stay alert and look out for loved ones who may be more vulnerable to these schemes,” Culver said.
Common scams that shoppers should watch for include bait-and-switch tactics, skimming devices, and fraudulent websites designed to mimic legitimate retailers.
Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday also provided advice for safe online shopping during the holidays. “Every holiday season brings a wave of scams, and we expect the same this year,” Sunday said. “Stay vigilant – if a deal seems too good to be true, take a moment to verify and consult a trusted family member. If you encounter a scam, report it. A prompt report plays a crucial role in helping us crack down on scammers.”
Attorney General Sunday’s office has made available a Scams Complaint Form for residents who experience or suspect fraudulent activity.
The FBI notes that skimming devices remain a significant problem during the holidays, costing consumers and financial institutions over $1 billion each year. The agency offers resources on how to recognize such devices and avoid falling victim to related scams.
