Geisinger announced on April 10 that it is observing National Donate Life Month by hosting flag-raising ceremonies at several of its hospitals to honor organ donors and raise awareness about the need for transplants.

The campaign aims to highlight the gap between those needing transplants and available organs, which remains a significant concern in Pennsylvania and across the United States. Organ donation can make a direct difference for thousands of patients awaiting lifesaving care.

Michael Marvin, MD, chair of the Geisinger Department of Transplantation and Liver Surgery, said, “The need for organ donors continues to outpace availability. In Pennsylvania alone, thousands of people are waiting for a transplant. Organ donation directly determines whether those patients get the chance to move forward with lifesaving care.”

Staff members, patients, and community participants attended ceremonies at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Geisinger Jersey Shore Hospital, Geisinger Lewistown Hospital, Geisinger Medical Center and Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center. The annual flag-raising events during National Donate Life Month are designed to encourage more people to register as organ donors.

More than 100,000 people nationwide—and over 6,000 in Pennsylvania—are currently waiting for an organ transplant. This highlights an ongoing need for both registered and living donors throughout the state.

Geisinger is one of the nation’s leading providers of value-based care serving urban and rural communities across central and northeastern Pennsylvania. The nonprofit system includes ten hospital campuses among its 163 care sites and employs more than 27,000 people statewide.
