The Geisinger Nurse Residency Program has received accreditation with distinction from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), marking a significant milestone for the organization. The ANCC’s Practice Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP) is recognized globally as a standard for residency and fellowship programs that help registered nurses and advanced practice registered nurses transition into new clinical settings.
Achieving PTAP accreditation requires organizations to undergo a comprehensive process, including submitting detailed written documentation and participating in an on-site evaluation. The accreditation with distinction is the highest recognition offered by the ANCC.
“This recognition speaks volumes about the experience and personal support the Geisinger Nurse Residency Program offers new nurses,” said Lindsey Ford, DNP, RN, senior director of nursing excellence and nurse residency/fellowship programs. “By immersing our new nursing colleagues in the environments where they’ll build their careers, we’re laying a strong foundation for long-term success and professional growth.”
Geisinger first earned this accreditation in 2021, becoming only the 208th program worldwide to be recognized at that time. The initial four-year accreditation included Geisinger Community Medical Center, Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, and Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre.
With this latest achievement, additional hospitals in central and north-central Pennsylvania are now covered by the program’s expanded recognition: Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital, Geisinger Jersey Shore Hospital, Geisinger Medical Center, Geisinger Medical Center Muncy, and Geisinger Shamokin Area Community Hospital.
Established in 2015, the residency program enrolls all newly graduated nurses into a year-long curriculum designed to help them move from academic study to professional practice within a supportive environment.
Geisinger is one of Pennsylvania’s largest healthcare providers. The system serves approximately 1.2 million people across urban and rural areas through more than 163 care sites—including ten hospital campuses—and operates its own health plan. It employs over 27,000 staff members statewide.
In 2024, Geisinger became part of Risant Health as part of efforts to expand value-based care nationwide. More information can be found at geisinger.org or through their social media channels on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.
