Two medical students from Geisinger School of Medicine’s MD Class of 2027, Kulsoom Mohammad and Nathan Witteveen, have received the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Medical Student Award. This award is given to only ten medical students across the United States each year. The ASCP recognized both students for their academic excellence, leadership abilities, and interest in pathology.
The nominations were made by Renee Frank, MD, a pathologist at Geisinger and faculty mentor to both recipients. Dr. Frank said, “Both Kulsoom and Nathan embody the values of Geisinger, GCSOM, and the ASCP; that is to say they are dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in everything they do at Geisinger. They both exhibit traits that will suit them well in their professional careers and I am proud to have supported them in their training. Like past winners from GCSOM, they are exceedingly deserving of this recognition.”
The awards will be presented during the ASCP’s annual meeting scheduled for November in Atlanta.
Nathan Witteveen commented on receiving the honor: “Winning this award is an honor. I love pathology because it keeps a broad scope of practice while allowing me to give confident, result-driven diagnoses that directly impact patient care.”
Kulsoom Mohammad added, “Receiving the ASCP Medical Student Award is a true honor. It’s incredibly rewarding to have my academic efforts and interest in pathology recognized by such a respected organization. This award inspires me to continue engaging deeply with the foundations of medicine, through diagnosis, education, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration, and it reaffirms my commitment to becoming the most thoughtful and well-rounded physician I can be.”
The ASCP describes itself as a leading medical society for pathology and laboratory professionals with more than 100,000 members worldwide. Its membership includes board-certified pathologists as well as laboratory professionals and students.
Geisinger College of Health Sciences serves as the academic arm of Geisinger and focuses on educating future healthcare leaders through hands-on learning and research programs across various disciplines including medicine and nursing.
