Four hospitals in the Geisinger system have received recognition from the American Heart Association (AHA) for their cardiac care. Geisinger Community Medical Center, Geisinger Medical Center, and Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center were certified as Comprehensive Heart Attack Centers by both the AHA and the Joint Commission. Additionally, Geisinger Medical Center, Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, and Geisinger Lewistown Hospital achieved certification as Comprehensive Hypertension Centers.

Geisinger Community Medical Center, Geisinger Medical Center, and Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center also earned Mission: Lifeline Regional Recognition and Get With the Guidelines Gold Plus recognition for their treatment of STEMI, a severe heart attack caused by a complete blockage of a coronary artery. All four hospitals received Get With the Guidelines Gold Plus recognition for their work in treating stroke and coronary artery disease as well as providing cardiac care to patients with type 2 diabetes.

“Geisinger is committed to providing the highest level of care for each one of our patients, every day,” said Jason Mitchell, M.D., executive vice president and chief medical officer at Geisinger. “Our neighbors can count on us to provide life-saving heart and vascular care when they need it most, whether they live in an urban or rural community. We are honored to be recognized by the American Heart Association for this care.”

Recent milestones celebrated by Geisinger’s heart care teams include performing 3,000 transcatheter aortic valve replacements at Geisinger Wyoming Valley; treating 500 patients with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation; and graduating 1,000 patients from its remote cardiac rehabilitation program.

Geisinger serves about 1.2 million people across central and northeastern Pennsylvania through its network of hospitals and clinics. The nonprofit health system employs more than 27,000 people statewide and has an estimated economic impact of $16.8 billion on Pennsylvania’s economy each year. In 2024, it joined Risant Health to further expand value-based healthcare initiatives nationally.
