Geisinger has announced a $2.5 million expansion of its Cancer Center in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, as part of its ongoing commitment to improve health care access for residents of Schuylkill County. The project will add nearly 2,000 square feet to the existing facility at 1 E. Norwegian St., increasing both services and treatment space.
“Geisinger is committed to enhancing care for our neighbors across the region,” said Alex Zimmerman, chief administrative office of Geisinger’s central region. “As a lifelong resident of Schuylkill County, I’m proud to see this expansion as it will allow more of our friends and family to receive these critical services locally, without having to travel.”
The expanded center will occupy the entire first floor after relocating an existing tenant to the building’s second floor. Construction will be completed in phases so that current services remain available throughout the process.
The facility currently provides hematology and radiation oncology services as well as infusion therapies. With an aging population and earlier cancer diagnoses becoming more common, demand for comprehensive cancer care is rising. The new space will double patient care areas and include additional exam rooms, infusion spaces, a dedicated blood draw area, and expanded staff offices.
Opened in 2018, the Pottsville center complements other Geisinger facilities in central and northeastern Pennsylvania such as Geisinger Medical Center and the Frank M. and Dorothea Henry Cancer Center at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center. This project follows recent investments including the opening of Geisinger Cancer Center Dickson City in 2025 and construction underway on a new cancer center in Lewisburg.
“Expanding our cancer services in Schuylkill County allows more patients the ability to stay in the region, closer to home, while undergoing treatment,” said Rajiv Panikkar, M.D., chair of the Geisinger Cancer Institute. “Our cancer program features top-tier physicians and advanced practice providers who work with comprehensive multidisciplinary care teams to establish treatment plans, while also providing the latest technologies and clinical trials for our patients.”
Geisinger’s outpatient offerings in Schuylkill County also include family medicine, women’s health services, pediatric subspecialties, laboratory work, and imaging.
Design work for the expansion is underway with construction expected later this year; completion is projected for 2027.
Geisinger serves about 1.2 million people across central and northeastern Pennsylvania through its network of hospitals and clinics. The organization employs over 27,000 people statewide.
